My name is Lucy Butsch and I am eager to help students move beyond personal essays that may be “good enough,” towards work that is original, compelling, and, above all, towards stories that excite the writer! The word essay originates from the French verb “essayer,” meaning “to try.” This is the point, in my belief, of an admissions essay. Guiding a writer to earnestly essay, to identify what it is that motivates them, that defines their unique perspective and distinguishes them in a sea of applicants is precisely my expertise. My background combines literary scholarship with editorial and teaching experience; I hold a Master’s degree in English Literature from Northwestern University and received the John Gerrit’s Award for Excellence in Creative Writing for distinguished undergraduate work in autofiction.
