Of Mouse and Woman: A Conversation with Kirsty Bennet

Kirsty Bennet, a former producer and director with Moth Radio Hour and founder of MITell.

Kirsty Bennet is telling me a story. A Brit with an accent like chipped glass, she must captivate every haplessly nasal American. Still, story telling is her domain and she understands delivery.

We are zooming – along with the rest of the world – on a weekday afternoon while Kirsty’s infant naps. As a former Moth producer, and the founder of MITell, an initiative offering a storytelling group and customized workshops for members across the MIT campus, Kirsty has distilled expertise. She shares three guiding principles for writing personal statements and sharing your story:

  1. Be an honest version of yourself. People can tell if you are lying on stage or in the personal statement.
  2. Who am I, at the start of the story and who am I, at the end of the story? If those two are like largely unchanged…then it’s not really a story.
  3. Don’t look for the big stuff. Look for the little stuff.
